How Simulator Crashes Helped Me Prepare for a Race Track

I crashed at the same corner as the Lamborghini team. Mine cost nothing.

I bought a professional sim to prepare for the Algarve circuit. Crashing in it turned out to be the most valuable part.

If you have ever been on a race track you know accidents happen a lot. Racers fly off at random places.

1. Getting near the limit

It took me 10 to 20 hours with telemetry and onboard videos to get within a tenth of a second of my target times. Then I started to push past it.

2. Losing the car on purpose

The track is laser scanned, so the physics, the spins and the run off areas match the real thing. Small changes started to lose me the car at different sections.

3. The corners with no way out

A small mistake at those points puts you in the wall no matter what you do afterwards. There is no recovery.

Those became the places I treated with respect, and I never had a spin there.

The Lamborghini team lost control in front of me and put a brand new car into the wall.

I watched several other cars lose it at the very same spot.
